  1938 Birthday letter postmark
Posted by: Roy Burton - 07-26-2026, 01:32 PM - Forum: Anschluss - No Replies

Hi Everybody (Note first post on forum)

While at the 2026 York Stamp show in the UK on 17th July 2026, I stumbled across this letter envelope.

Would this be considered a type of first day cover due to the postmark ?

Adolf Hitler's 49th Birthday 1938 stamp Third Reich Germany

Below an except form an American newspaper The NEW York Times;-
LINK https://www.nytimes.com/1938/04/20/archi...-with.html

BERLIN, April 19.-"Great Germany," which puts its new name in the same proud juxtaposition with Great Britain as Rome does its imperial title with the British Empire, has been mobilized to celebrate tomorrow the forty-ninth birthday of its creator, Adolf Hitler, with greater pomp and ceremony than ever marked the birthday celebration of either a German or an Austrian emperor.

The climax will be a parade before Hitler of some 9,500 men selected from thirty different army units representing all branches of both the German and the former Austrian armed forces down the famed Unter den Linden tomorrow noon. Included in the Austrian representation is, notably, the first battalion of the Fourteenth Infantry regiment of Linz, whose commander Major Ruckser, and other officers and men in the regiment were leaders in the secret "National Socialist Soldiers' Ring," which worked for the Anschluss in the Austrian army long before the Anschluss occurred.

On reading the above paragraph I was surprised by the support of parts of the Austrian Army in the Anschluss , I knew that the invasion went unopposed.

Kind Regards

Had a boyhood collection and went back to stamps collecting during Lockdown. Main collections are Romania (as father from Transylvania), Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and German Empire.
Currently Treasurer and Membership Secretary of APS and also member of various other groups as well as being President of the Harrogate Philatelic Society. Would tend to call myself a collector rather than a philatelist.
In my working life I was an accountant primarily in manufacturing (Printing) and then self-employed as a Cost Consultant

Hi ,

Can anyone offer me a lift from North Yorkshire to the APS weekend in Peterborough on 3 October, returning on 5th. I'm happy to contribute sparkling conversation and a contribution to the petrol cost.

Back in the 1980's I won a Silver at an Australian Exhibition with a display of Austrian Empire, the exhibit range from 1850 through to 1890 and consisted of mostly FU sets and some varieties. Because of work commitments other hobbies I didn't resume stamp collecting until 2015 when I further pursued building my Specialised collection. As I gathered material I became interested in the Cancellations and decided to make them shared focus in my display and I further replaced the FU with cancelled stamps where available . I have attached 2 pages of my 1863 collection as a sample.
Do you like this approach?

Hi,
I originally joined the APS in the 1980’s which helped me build a reasonable Austrian and Specialised Empire collection. In the early 90’s my work situation changed and I set my stamp collecting aside until 2015 by which time I’d retired and health was slowing down my other activities.I have find computers and the internet considerable aid in building ones collection and administrating the collection.
These days I am still into Specialised Austrian Empire but have added Postal history (Cancels) into the content and as a sideline I’m into Empire Cancellations as well.
I’m looking to find others with similar interests to source material and to trade / exchange my surplus. If you share my interest or have any questions re my exhibits (when I post them) feel free to contact me – karel.michielsen@gmail.com
My wife and I live in South Australia in the Adelaide Hills on 2.5 hectares where there is plenty to do, to keep us busy and I find philately a good way to slow me down and keep occupied.

  Strange Cancellation/Overprint
Posted by: Feldmarschall - 08-24-2024, 06:31 PM - Forum: Philatelic Questions - No Replies

Anyone recognize the strange overprint on these stamps?  I was able to use some software to make it stand out a little better, and I've recreated what it looks like for a little more legibility...I have yet to see anything about this in any of my catalogs and literature.  A friend remarked that he thinks it may be from some kind of a fiscal use, but doesn't know one way or the other and is basing that thought on other things he's seen from other countries.
